The Kirtland Formation was deposited shortly after the Fruitland Formation, and includes thick greenish shales and siltstones, with just some thin coal beds and white sandstone beds. The decreased aspect of the formation is known as the Hunter Wash Member and is particularly bounded by a white sandstone bed at its base and a distinctive brown sands
